According to Chapter 6 of the Big Book, when you are working through an alcohol or drug rehab program or you have finished, it is best to ask your “Creator to show you the way of patience, tolerance, kindliness, and love.” When it comes to your recovery, you will want to have all 4 of these things with you at all times. They are very important to a successful recovery.

Patience

You will want patience to be a part of your recovery from an addiction. Whether you are still in an alcohol or drug rehabilitation center or you are years into your recovery, patience is a great virtue to have. You will need to be patient from the time you get clean and sober throughout your entire recovering lifestyle. There are going to be things that test your patience, but you must stay strong. Remember that patience is your guide to keeping calm and serene in your recovery.

Tolerance

Tolerance is another great virtue to have in your recovering lifestyle. When you are tolerant of the recovery process, of others in your recovery process, and of yourself, you will make great progress. Tolerance breeds patience and the 2 go hand-in-hand. Tolerance also helps you to be kinder to others and show them love as well. This goes for yourself as well. You need to be tolerant of yourself and everything you do in the recovery process.

Kindliness

Kindliness is something you need in your recovering lifestyle as well. You need to make sure you are kind to yourself first and foremost. The kindness you show yourself will be a great power when you are going through tough times. You will remember that you are only a human being and humans make mistakes. This knowledge and the acts of kindness will help you get through your recovery and reduce your risks of relapsing.

Love

Love is another virtue you will want to have in your recovery. By loving yourself, you learn that your addiction was not your fault. It is a disease that millions of people have. You will learn to love the strength you have for overcoming the addiction. You can also show love to others during your recovery. Doing this will help you to build your support network. It will help you to grow closer to your friends and family. Most of all, it will help you to develop better relationships with yourself and others who are in your life.

Recovery is not a one-step process. There are many acts to getting clean and sober and then transferring into a recovering lifestyle. There more you know about this, the better things will be for you. However, the one thing you should know and remember today is that if you have patience, tolerance, kindliness, and love, you can do amazing things in your recovery. You can reduce the risk of relapsing and better your life from this point forward.
