Chapter 6 of the Big Books says it perfectly, “Having made our personal inventory, what shall we do about it? We have been trying to get a new attitude, a new relationship with our Creator, and to discover the obstacles in our path.” This is just the beginning. Taking your personal inventory is a fantastic step. However, there is more to it than that. You must keep moving forward if you are going to succeed in your recovering lifestyle. Just taking the personal inventory isn’t enough.

Getting a New Attitude

There is something called the recovery attitude. You can start learning more about this attitude in alcohol treatment centers. If you are in recovery from an addiction for awhile, you will start to see that your attitude is much different than it used to be. You are happier, more content, less argumentative, less judgmental, and not as angry. This new attitude is going to help you stay clean and sober for longer. It is going to help you develop a recovering lifestyle, instead of just being clean and sober. Getting a new attitude is one of the best things you can do for yourself while in recovery from an addiction.

Developing a New Relationship with Our Creator

When you are striving to have a recovering lifestyle, developing a new relationship with your Creator is one of the ways you can do that. There are many paths that recovering addicts take. The most important thing to understand is that your Creator, whomever or whatever that may mean for you, is out there. They are helping you to make these changes in your life. Your Creator is helping you gain the strength you need to overcome the addiction. Developing a new relationship with your Creator can give you the empowerment you need to stay clean and sober.

Discovering the Obstacles in Our Path

During your process and journey through recovery, whether still in alcohol rehab or after, you will work on discovering the obstacles in your path. This will be much more than just writing down your triggers, cravings, or the obstacles. It will be more about finding ways to overcome those obstacles. You will make plans to work through and around the obstacles. Yes, some of them are going to be tougher than others. However, with time, you will learn that you can overcome anything. You can develop the strength and empowerment you need to turn your life in the right direction. Obstacles will be just another thing you need to overcome, instead of the things that bring you down.

When you are in recovery from an addiction, after taking your personal inventory, there is more to the recovery process. It will take you time to get a new attitude, develop a new relationship with your Creator, and discover the obstacles in your path. However, in time, you are going to see that doing all three of these things is just what you need to live a successful recovery. The more you focus on doing these three things and take action on them, the more you can improve your recovering lifestyle.
