There are many alcoholics who become very skeptical when they begin to think about God. Many alcoholics believe that the Power spoken of in the 12 Steps must relate to the One and Only God so many people in this world believe in. Well, for the atheists and other skeptics, this doesn’t really seem like a good starting point. In fact, it turns many alcoholics away from getting into alcohol rehab. The truth is all you have to do is believe in a Power greater than yourself. It doesn’t have to be the One and Only God. It can be whatever or whomever you believe to be greater than yourself. Believing in a Power greater than yourself can help with your recovery process in many ways.

Sense of Empowerment

One of the ways in which believing in a Power greater than yourself can help in your recovery journey is by giving yourself newfound empowerment. When you stop trying to take everything onto your own shoulders, you let some of that stress go. You start believing there is something or someone out there that can help you overcome the disease of alcoholism. That feeling of helpfulness and hope can make you feel partially or even completely empowered. This feeling of empowerment can start your growth into detox programs, recovery, and the future.

Sense of True Peace and Happiness

In Chapter 4 of the Big Book, it states that believing in a Power greater than ourselves will give us peace and happiness. As many people have proven, this is the truth. When you can let go of the need to take on the disease on your own, you feel more at peace and happier as well. You feel less alone in the journey of overcoming the addiction. It doesn’t feel like the grip of the addiction is as tight. You can finally take some deep breaths. By believing in a Power greater than yourself, you can find true peace, contentment, and happiness in your life.

Sense of Direction

Another way that believing in a Power greater than yourself can help you into recovery is by giving you a sense of direction. When you finally admit that there is a Power greater than yourself or you are ready to believe there is, you can convince yourself that treatment centers actually have programs that will work for you. You start finding the direction that is right for your life. You begin talking to others about how to overcome the alcohol addiction.

Overcoming an alcohol addiction does take time. It takes work, effort, patience, and more. However, with that being said, it is important to know that believing in a Power greater than yourself is one of the best ways to start your journey to a recovering lifestyle. If you have an addiction to alcohol, now is the time to start believing in this Power.
