When you are working through an alcohol rehab or addiction recovery program, there are some things you will be working on. One of the things you will be doing is telling someone else your story. This is especially true when you are working on a 12 Step addiction recovery program. Many recovering alcoholics have avoided telling other their story. They have kept their inventory to themselves and ended up relapsing. If you want a better chance at avoiding a relapse, sharing your story is a must. According to Chapter 6 of the Big Book, “They only thought they had lost their egoism and fear; they only thought they had humbled themselves. But they had not learned enough humility, fearlessness, and honesty, in the sense we find it necessary, until they told someone else all their life story.”

Learning Humility

When you start sharing your story with others, you are more likely to learn humility. Humility is a low view or modest view of one’s own importance. During your recovery from an addiction, this is extremely important. You want to make sure you understand that you are just like everyone else. There are things you have done that others have done as well. You are not alone. By learning humility, you can gain a better sense of self in your recovery. You can gain a better sense of direction for your recovery as well.

Learning Fearlessness

Everyone has fears in their life. This is just the way things are. However, when you are pursuing a recovering lifestyle, it is important that you learn fearlessness. You need to learn that there are things that will come up in your life. With that being said, you must learn how to overcome those things. For example, most alcoholics are fearful of recovery. However, there life is never going to better if they don’t learn to overcome the addictive lifestyle. When you share your story while in one of the alcohol treatment centers, you learn how to show your fears and overcome them.

Learning Honesty

Most people lie to themselves and sometimes to others as well. When you share your story with others during your recovery, you can learn honesty. You can learn more about how it feels to be honest with others about what you have gone through. Honesty is going to take you very far in your recovery. It is going to allow you to build better relationships with others and with yourself. It is going to help you learn how to tell others what you want. If you want to build a more successful recovering lifestyle, honesty is going to help you get that.

These are some of the things you will learn by sharing your story with others in recovery. Whether you are working a 12 Step program or another type of recovery program, sharing your story can help you in many ways. Whether you are learning humility, fearlessness, honesty, or something else, you can improve your recovery and make more progress in the meantime as well.
