Do you know what is more challenging than getting sober? Staying sober! Yes, it can be challenging to stay sober, especially when you have to revisit your old, destructive patterns. You have to remain strong in the face of temptation when you bump into your old friends or over the holidays when everyone is drinking.

However, you must not feel like a failure if you find it challenging to stay sober. It is common to experience setbacks during addiction recovery.

Below, we have mentioned the top six tips to help you stay sober during recovery.

1. Care for your mental health- Your mental health can significantly affect your addiction. In most cases, mental illness and addiction go together. If you ignore your mental health, you will relapse again and again throughout your recovery.

You should also consider consulting a mental health professional and an addiction expert to help you stay sober.

2. Work on relationships with friends and family- Involvement of your loved ones is crucial for addiction recovery as they can help you avoid relapsing. However, stressful family dynamics lead to drug or alcohol addiction in some cases. If so, your family must enroll themselves in family therapy. They should ensure that they are not enabling your addiction in any way.

Your friends can also offer great support during recovery. However, remember not to stay amongst people who may trigger your addiction.

3. Join support groups or therapy sessions- You can enroll in therapy as it will give you a platform to talk about issues you might not usually want to discuss. When you work through your problems, your loved ones are more likely to encourage you towards sobriety. You can also join support groups to learn more about sobriety, recovery, and relapse prevention. There, you might meet people going through the same struggle as you are.

4. Focus on healthy relationships- Your loved ones are essential to your recovery. However, remember the quality of these relationships matters. You must cut off those relationships which are not encouraging your sobriety in any way. Delete their contacts from your phone, block them, and avoid meeting them. You should not feel guilty for leaving the relationships that fail to support your recovery.

5. Learn how to do things alone- You are most likely to relapse if your daily routine is not busy. Your life might have revolved around consuming drugs or alcohol before, but now you must find new ways to keep yourself busy. Learn how to do fun things alone and not depend on others to keep yourself busy. You can:

  • -Visit a museum
  • -Teach yourself a new instrument
  • -Have a spa day
  • -Take a class
  • -Learn a new language
  • -Read books
  • -Take up a hobby

6. Find ways to cope if you get thrown off your schedule- Disorganized or a chaotic life can push you back towards addiction. Therefore, you must set a routine and follow it; get up around the same time every day, schedule calls with loved ones, take a bath/shower to unwind every evening, and go to bed at the same time every night.

You should also find ways to cope if you get thrown off your schedule. You can reach out to your family, join rehab, meditate, or talk to a mental health professional.
