When you are recovering from an alcohol addiction, it is important to know that you could benefit from the 12 Steps. Millions of people, from all over the world, have taken part in Alcoholics Anonymous and used the 12 Steps to start, build, and further their recovery. You can do this as well. While every step is important and has its own set of benefits, it is important to learn more about Step 3 as it is used in Alcoholics Anonymous and alcohol rehab.

According to Chapter 5 of the Big Book, Step 3 includes this – “we decided to turn our will and our life over to God as we understood Him.” When first starting to live a recovering lifestyle, most people don’t quite understand what this means. You can find out more about this Step and how you can use it in your recovery starting today.

Life Can’t Be Run On Self-Will

Many people are convinced they can run their life through self-will and self-will only. Chapter 5 of the Big Book states, “The first requirement is that we be convinced that any life run on self-will can hardly be a success.” This is completely the truth. As an alcoholic, you can’t just will yourself out of an addictive lifestyle. You must have much more than that. Just as mentioned in Step 3, you must decide to turn your will and your life over to God as you understand Him. If you can do that, your life can change. Will power alone won’t turn your life around. Those who attend an alcohol rehabilitation program learn this as well.

Rid Yourself of Selfishness

Yes, at first thought, this may seem blunt. However, according to Chapter 5 of the Big Book, it states, “Whatever our protestations, are not most of us concerned with ourselves, our resentments, or our self-pity?” This is another truth we must recognize as alcoholics. Whether you are in recovery yet or not, it is time to see that everything doesn’t revolve around your own doing. There is so much more power in this world than just what is going on with you. When you can decide to turn your will and your life over to God as you understand Him, you can see there is a cycle greater than your addiction. Life has a different plan for you, if you only allow your Higher Power into your life.

Allow God to Be Your Director

Chapter 5 of the Big Book states, “–God was going to be our Director.” Look to your Higher Power, God as you understand Him. Realize that your Higher Power has control over your life and you are going to allow that to be your truth. Once you realize that you can’t control everything and you can get help from your Higher Power, your mindset can start to shift. You can start to realize that allowing God, as you understand Him, to guide and direct your life, helps you reduce your urge to drink. It helps you realize there is more to your life than being an alcoholic.
