In Chapter 8 of the Big Book, it states, “When drinking, they were strangers.” Spouses of alcoholics often see their significant other as a stranger when they are under the influence of alcohol. They see them in a different light than the man or woman they married. If you are married to an alcoholic, you often see a stranger in your loved one. Alcoholism has taken over their life and made them into what seems to be a different person.
Inaccessible

Judgments or Common Sense
You might think that your spouse’s common sense has gone out the window since they became an alcoholic. This may not be so. Alcoholism is a disease and it takes hold of people and doesn’t like to let go. Now, your husband or wife’s proper judgments may be lacking, but their common sense just isn’t seeing what is right in front of them. The alcohol has that sort of power over them.
Agreeing to Change
Maybe you have tried talking to your spouse about changing their ways. They might have seen or agreed that alcohol was dangerous to their life. Maybe they even agreed to go to an alcohol rehabilitation center. However, shortly after they began drinking again. This can be completely frustrating and seem so unreal.
With all of this being said, you might be wondering to yourself, “what is going to change?” or “how will things ever get better?”. They might not. It is up to your spouse to decide that they need help. It might take a little more tough love and ultimatums to get them to change or that might not make any difference. Some alcoholics need to hit rock bottom before they change and others might never get help.
